Last June 18, 2015, the Phenomenal Star was recognized by Philippine Entertainment Portal in their PEP List Year 2 Awards as the ‘Male TV Star of the Year – Editors’ Choice Category’. He graced the red carpet at the Grand Ballroom of Solaire Resort & Casino wearing a statement against the Yulin ‘Dog Meat’ Fesival in China – the festivalis where 10,000 dogs are slaughtered and served up as meals.
In an interview with reporters (PEP) that night, the Male TV Star of the Year further elaborated about his look or his ‘statement’. “Ito yung mainit na pinaguusapan ngayon na festival sa China na may kinalaman sa pagpatay sa mga aso. Siyempre sa Pilipinas hindi natin sinusuportahang mga Pilipino iyan kasi ito ay mga aso, bahagi iyan ng pamilya natin.”
In Vice Ganda’s Instagram, he posted a picture of his look with the caption: “To show protest to#YulinDogmeatFestival I wore this special costume made by @hermitjr (#hermitsm) at the #PEPlist Awards Night. Thank you so much PEP for the Male Tv Star of the Year Award.”
When asked about his attention-grabbing outfits or look in award ceremonies, Vice Ganda told PEP (pep.ph): “Alam niyo, nae-excite akong talaga tuwing may awards night.. ’Di ba, sa ibang bansa, big deal talaga ito, yung mga awards night? Kaya dapat dito sa Pilipinas, ano rin, kumbaga, ganun din ang mga pagtrato ng mga nagsisipag-participate. Lalo na itong PEP, pinaghirapan ito ng mga organizers, kaya dapat hindi rin puchu-puchu ang presence na ibibigay mo. At saka, nakaka-excite, di ba, ang sarap magdamit. Bihira lang naman ito, hindi naman araw-araw.” (http://www.pep.ph/news/53676/vice-ganda-attends-the-pep-list-with-a-fashion-statement-stop-yulin-dog#HAC78ePBgwRsLMuv.99)
Per Vice Ganda’s stylist, Aaron Mangsat, Vice Ganda wore a perforated top with wide leg pants from Joey Samson (@garmentsurgeon). While his headdress is by young designer Hermit Tan. Mangsat shared that Tan came all the way from Angono, Rizal to deliver the head dress and brave the traffic because of the heavy downpour. Mangsat was thankful for Tan since he made an effort to join Vice Ganda and Team Vice in Solaire without any hesitations.
Meanwile, Hermit Tan told us that it took him 2 weeks to assemble the headpiece. He informed that the headpiece of the headdress are made from sculpted goat jaws and dog skull – “no animals were harmed from the process, all thru ethical means.. the beadworks are heavily inspired by burqas, ’cause I want to empower womanhood..” Tan also labelled the headdress as ‘Venus Headdress’ because he wants the wearer to look like a demigoddess, to be as beautiful as Venus.
